Proprietary OS Upgrades – Apple sets the standard

I have to say I’m impressed, something that doesn’t happen all that often in the cut throat world of software provision.

I’ve just pre-ordered my copy of the latest OSX release Snow Leopard which will be the first OS upgrade I’ve paid for since OSX 10.4 (Tiger) was release back in 2005.

Re-enabling AdBlock PlusAdBlock

For the last month I embarked on an experiment – I disabled AdBlock Plus (normally the first FireFox extension I install) in an attempt to be more supportive of the sites I visit on a daily basis.

The argument against AdBlock and similar technologies is perfectly simple – websites rely on advertising to monetize and support their content production – blocking the ads means you’re effectively removing any chance the content provider has of making any money out of your visit.

A very important birthday

Just a quick congrats to the Debian team for reaching their 16th Birthday.

For those who don’t know Debian (in addition to being a wonderfully stable and well thought out Linux distro in it’s own right) is the basis for the stupidly popular Ubuntu family of distros currently taking the world by storm. I’m not saying that without Debian there would be no Ubuntu but the heritage is certainly worthy of our respect.

Starting over – substance pending…

If there is something daunting about a blank page then that fear can be multiplied ten fold when the blank page is the first in the book.

This is not the first time I’ve written online. It’s not the first blog I’ve started. It is, however, the first blog I’ve started that has a focus; a goal which is to be worked toward. Nothing so crass as monetisation (although that may come in time) but rather the desire to build something that is valuable to others as a resource, something that will become a talking point and a forum for discussion of ideas.
